A Turkish national and doctoral student at Tufts University has been detained by U.S. Department of Homeland Security agents without explanation, her lawyer said Wednesday.

Tufts University in Massachusetts said that a doctoral student from Turkey’s visa had been revoked.

The judge, Nina Froes, found that evidence the Trump administration submitted to show why Mahdawi should be removed from the country was not admissible in court, according to new legal filings.

An immigration judge has dismissed the Trump administration’s deportation case against Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian graduate student and Columbia protest leader.

The judge ruled that the government failed to authenticate a memo from Secretary of State Marco Rubio that was used as the basis for the deportation proceedings against Mahdawi, a pro-Palestinian activist who was detained for two weeks in a Vermont prison.

The Columbia University student, who has a green card and lives in the Upper Valley, is protected from being deported while he appeals his 2025 arrest, his lawyers said.

A federal immigration judge has sided with the administration and renewed removal proceedings against him, reviving a case that had been dismissed by an earlier immigration judge. Now he is taking his case directly to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 1st Circuit, telling Democracy Now! that he is “technically without a backup plan” and relying on the federal courts for justice “because I believe that what the Trump administration has done is unconstitutional.”

The Trump administration has fired immigration judges who dismissed high-profile deportation cases against international students who joined protests in support of Palestinians. Judge Roopal Patel had ruled in January that the government had no grounds to deport Rümeysa Öztürk, a Turkish-born student targeted by the Trump administration. Öztürk was personally targeted by Secretary of State Marco Rubio after she wrote an op-ed in a student newspaper critical of Tufts University’s stances on Palestinian causes. Patel was fired on Friday, as were five other judges, including Nina Froes, who in February ended deportation proceedings against Columbia University Palestinian student Mohsen Mahdawi. The fired judges told The New York Times they’d come under pressure from the Trump administration to order more deportations.

Mohsen Mahdawi is reportedly appealing an order from the government pressing for his deportation.
