Ottomans, then English Colonization, then Ashkenazi Colonization

The population of Jews in Palestine in 1890, coinciding with the birth of modern Zionism, was 43,000, or less than 9% of the total population. They were largely Sephardic jews, not Ashkenazi Jews of Europe. For many Jews, a Jewish state did not accord with their understanding of Judaism. For practical reasons, many Jews opposed Zionism because the goal was to be a part of the local society (in Europe and the United States).
